POTS!

September 8, 2021

Not sure whether you have had time to take a closer look at your bills but plain old telephone service (better known as POTS line) charges are the newly awakened telco giant.

In 2017 on a 1 year contract with a large telco, that POTS line costs $70. That same POTS line in 2021 in some areas is as much as $417 per month (non-contract rate). YES, the cost of this line is now over $400 dollars per month. Needless to say, this charge DOES NOT include long distance or taxes, fees, and surcharges. Readers, I have bills that show these charges and, sadly, someone in accounting is paying these invoices. Did you feel that?!

Your first thought is - I have to have these lines for ____.

Understood, but does the line cost need to be a monthly donation?

In the new telco age, these carriers make more money on other services and do not care to maintain the infrastructure supporting the old services. Hence, the attention-grabbing rates. Some carriers will allow you to sign a contract bringing those rates more in line with the older reality, but you still have separate long distance cost and those lovely taxes, fees, and surcharges.

BUT, I cannot afford to lose that/those service/s by switching line number, much less pay the install cost.

AND I just love calling my carrier for support - said no one!

You have options-

  • If you bundle those lines on a contract, they will bill as low as $60 a month which includes long distance on an easy to read bill!
  • If you do not want to sign a contract, then the rate is higher and you pay separately for the long distance but nowhere near the $400 monthly service charge per line.

Both options are billing changes only - no downtime, better rates, and enterprise level support.
